Reading & Leeds Festivals announce iconic rapper Eminem as a Main Stage headliner for the 2013 event.

Reading & Leeds are back for 2013. With the festival goers' appetites well and truly whet, there is now even more to satisfy the hunger with the first of the highly-anticipated headliners to be revealed.

The most successful rapper in history, Eminem is the first headliner to be announced on the Main Stage at Reading & Leeds Festivals in 2013. 11 years after he topped the bill at the festivals, he returns for this performance, his only UK festival appearance in 2013.

Since the release of 1999's 'Slim Shady' LP, Eminem has established himself as a hip-hop god and he is an icon of modern culture. Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, there's no doubt that he will be one of the most popular headliners in the festivals' history.

Throughout his career, his live shows have been phenomenal. Playing with a mammoth live band, the Eminem show is simply unmissable. With no less than seven UK Number One singles under his belt, this performance is bound to be heavy on hits and one to remember.

Last week two brand new stages and the first names across the festival were announced, promising more music than ever before, with artists from the worlds of rock, indie, dance and grime added to the bill. 

The mighty Deftones will be playing on the Main Stage, Mercury Music Prize winners Alt-J will headline on the NME/Radio 1 Stage, Sub Focus will headline one day on the all new BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage and Boy Better Know ft. Wiley, JME and Skepta will take to the top of the bill in the BBC Radio 1Xtra Stage.

Musical Magic! From 2-Dimensional Notes to Real Music With the Swipe of a Scanner

Music undeniably plays a huge part in our lives. We’re constantly surrounded by it, and I’m sure there are many of you who would say you simply couldn’t live without music. But when you think about it, isn’t it fascinating that all the music you’re so used to hearing comes down to some circles and dots and squiggles drawn on rows of five parallel lines? For those of us not musically inclined, these notes and symbols may seem like a baffling code, but now, there’s an amazing device that instantly transforms these notes into actual music!

According to the story on DigInfo TV, the device, aptly named Gocen (meaning “5 lines” in Japanese), has been developed by a team at the Tokyo Metropolitan University led by Assistant Professor Tetsuaki Baba and allows you to scan handwritten sheet music and instantly hear it being played.
The range of information that Gocen is able to incorporate is simply quite amazing! Reading the notes to determine the correct pitch based on the note’s position on the stave is just the beginning. Gocen can also read written notation on the instrument that should be used and change the sound accordingly, so if it says “piano” or “guitar” on the music, the notes will be played in the sound of that instrument. The volume of the music can also be adjusted by the size of the notes.

Changing the key is also very easy; if “Fm” (F minor), for example, is written on the music, the system reads that and automatically adds the standard 4 flats to the music for you. Oh, and if it’s playing music as a string instrument, you can even make the note “vibrate” at the end by physically moving the device up and down You have to admit, this is one smart music reader!

According to comments in the DigInfo TV article, the team came up with the idea for this device came into being while talking with publishers of sheet music and musical scores. If you’re interested in the technical details, the system apparently uses what’s called an OpenCV Library and an original algorithm to analyze the music image, but I have to admit, that part is way beyond my understanding, so I’ll leave that to the experts.

The developers of Gocen feel that the device could be a very useful educational tool for music classes at schools to help motivate students to learn to read music. Imagine how much fund kids would have if they had something like this in their classrooms. Of course, Gocen can obviously be a very helpful device for professional composers as well, allowing them to easily get a feel for how their music sounds as they are writing it.

If you’re someone who’s confounded by notes and musical signs, who knows, you may find yourself using this device some day. And even if you’re perfectly comfortable reading sheet music, we still think you’ll find the video below quite fascinating. Enjoy!

One Direction hit No.1 in 32 countries

One Direction's second album TAKE ME HOME soars to the No.1 position on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart with over 540,000 copies sold this week, making them the first British band to have their debut and second albums debut at No.1 in the US.

This is the second time this year One Direction made history as their debut album, UP ALL NIGHT, entered the Billboard Top 200 Album chart at No.1, the first for a British band.

Christina Aguilera wants Bieber duet

Christina Aguilera says there is a 'possibility' she will record a duet with Justin Bieber.
The two stars attended the American Music Awards (AMAs) yesterday, where Justin was honoured with three prizes.
The Moves Like Jagger singer admires the 18-year-old and wouldn't rule out a musical collaboration.
'I'm really into this song right now called, As Long as You Love Me and it's Justin Bieber's song, so I'm actually looking forward to it tonight,' she told Extra TV.

Would I collaborate with Justin? Who knows, the possibilities are endless, so we'll see.'
The teen star recently worked with Nicki Minaj on catchy track Beauty and a Beat and the singers performed both separately and together at the awards show.
Even prior to his AMAs performance Christina admired the young heartthrob's music and took to Twitter to share a link to his As Long As You Love Me video.
'Must admit I'm loving this @justinbieber song. It's my JAM right now! :) :) (sic),' she wrote.
The 31-year-old also took to the stage at the AMAs to perform tracks from her latest album, Lotus.
The star showed off a curvier figure in a gorgeous purple dress on the red carpet and later changed into a tight black corset for her stint on stage.

Paul McCartney making a stand for turkey's

What is Paul McCartney eating for Christmas dinner this year? Not turkey, that's for sure ' and to bring the message home, the former Beatle appears in a brand-new PETA UK campaign, in which he shows off an "Eat No Turkey" T-shirt below the words "Celebrate Life This Holiday Season. Go Vegetarian".

When McCartney sat down to record his narration for PETA's video exposรฉ of the meat industry ' called "Glass Walls" for the music legend's famous statement "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian" ' he shared what his family eats for the holidays: "We eat a veggie roast at home, so if we have traditional moments like Christmas . the roast is perfect. It's completely vegetarian, but I can slice it, so I can do all my traditional dad things. We can do our family stuff with it, and it's delicious, so I much prefer that to my memory of turkey".

Every year, almost 10 million turkeys are slaughtered in the UK for Christmas dinners alone. In nature, turkeys are protective and loving parents as well as spirited explorers who can climb trees and run as fast as 25 miles per hour. But most turkeys slated to be killed for food are crammed into filthy warehouses, where disease, smothering and heart attacks are common. Turkeys are drugged and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight.

Jon Bon Jovi's daughter 'arrested after overdose'

Jon Bon Jovi's daughter was arrested this morning after overdosing on heroin, according to reports.

Nineteen-year-old Stephanie Rose Bongiovi was found unresponsive at her upstate New York dorm room just before 2am, local news station WKTV reports.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene at her Hamilton College dorm.

Stephanie was reportedly taken to a local hospital and is expected to be released on Wednesday.

The Town of Kirkland Police Department conducted a search in her room and found a 'small quantity' of heroin, marijuana and other drug paraphernalia, according to the outlet.

The teenager was reportedly arrested and charged her with three misdemeanours: possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and criminally using drug paraphernalia.

Fellow student Ian Grant, 21, also faces a misdemeanour drug charge.

Both students have been released from police custody and are expected to appear in court at a later date.

Hamilton College told the news station they are cooperating with police in the investigation.

Stephanie is Jon's eldest of four children with wife Dorothea Hurley.

The singer has yet to issue comment on the report.
